Plastic Processing – An Overview of Basic Concepts

Plastic is a unique material known for its superior performance and cost-effectiveness compared to other conventional materials.

Applications of plastics in human life have increased over time. Not only this, over the years Plastics applications in various sectors are continuously growing. For example – Automobile, Agriculture, Aerospace, Construction, Infrastructure, Telecommunication, Medical, Packaging, etc.

So with the Growing Applications of Plastics, It needs various different types of processing methods and machinery to produce quality plastics products at affordable cost.

What is Plastic Processing?

Plastics Processing is the process of converting plastic raw materials into semi-finished or finished products. Mostly Granules or Powder form of plastics raw material used in different processing methods like – Injection Molding, Extrusion Molding, etc.

Interesting Fact –

The initial plastic processing was started in the 1820s. It was discovered by Thomas Hancock & Processing was related to mastication in natural rubber.

A sentence about plastic processing proves to be very correct – “Get the shape and set the shape”. Here Get the Shape means setting the desired shape of the product using modern techniques.

On the other hand, Set the Shape means understanding and organize the process and material used to give the best quality to the product.

Classification of Plastic Processing Methods –

Classification Methods Come Under
1. Primary Processing Methods Injection Moulding, Extrusion Moulding, Blow Moulding, Compression / Transfer Moulding, etc.
2. Secondary Processing Methods Roto Moulding, Thermoforming, Coating, FRP Fabrication, Calendaring, etc.
3. Tertiary Processing Methods Cutting, Drilling, Welding, Bending, etc.
